Crescent Veil Concept
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
It was a thrill for us to design the Crescent Veil concept as part of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator International Architecture Award Competition in 2009 for Za'abeel Park, a public recreational space in Dubai. Our concept is a uniquely formed icon, representing Dubai in an urban context as the business hub of the Persian Gulf region and an important international commercial, cultural, and recreational centre in the world.
The structure's design powerfully symbolizes beauty, mystique, and strength; and is inspired by the rich culture, heritage, and natural charm of the country. It is designed as an open lattice 'Vertical Park' with access to each level for use as open observation decks and gardens. The veil-like lattice grid design was inspired by the traditional burka and the elegant curve is reminiscent of the crescent moon, both strong symbols of traditional Arab culture.
The sail-like form of the structure stands respectfully counterpoint to many iconic towers that make up Dubai's exciting skyline. The elevators in this contemporary construction are one-of-a-kind technological masterpieces, curving elegantly skyward - projecting the future direction of the city. The emblematic structure would provide views over the main transport artery, Sheikh Zayed road, and surrounding skyscrapers.
With tourism now being one of Dubai's main sources of revenue, Crescent Veil's attractive and powerful shape would play a role in attracting visitors from around the world to marvel at the city's commitment to the global community; in terms of international cooperation, trade and commerce, new technology development, and cultural understanding.
