City of Calgary Shepard Operational Workplace Centre (OWC)
Calgary, Alberta
Located in the outskirts of Calgary's Shepard Industrial Area, this facility is user-friendly and modern, and has dramatically improved the environmental quality of the workplace.
The Phase I, 65,649 sf. pre-engineered OWC building was completed for $10.75 million in June 2010, and is a service centre and staging point for operational business units of the City such as Water Services, Water Resource, Roads, Parks, Waste & Recycling, Fleet Services, Calgary Transit, and Finance & Supply. Special consideration was key in designing designated space for materials storage, vehicle storage and maintenance, vehicle fueling stations, and offices for training and administration.
SAHURI and the collaborating contractor were commended for their commitment and attention to detail by the operator who was extremely satisfied with the end product. We were then commissioned to complete a second 45,036 sf. building on this site for $12 million. The Phase II building includes design modifications for increased safety measures to accommodate the City's fleet of vehicles that use alternative fuels (compressed natural gas). This included spark-free hardware and mechanical/electrical systems, radiant in-floor heating, and blast-proof design. It also included removing skylights where gases could collect; increasing the number of sensors in the roof area and ensuring that if a sensor is tripped, the overhead doors will open and the ceiling exhaust activates, effectively evacuating harmful gasses from the building.
In this project, SAHURI had a unique opportunity to review the performance of materials and systems implemented in Phase I and adapt them for better performance in the Phase II facility.
